Chiropractic is a primary health care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal complaints, including problems with the joints, especially related to the spine.

Chiropractic treatment mainly involves movement of joints in the spine or other areas of the body, that are not moving properly; via safe, often gentle and specific manipulation. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound, laser therapy, exercise prescription and acupuncture, as well as advice about posture and lifestyle. When assessing patients they take their entire physical, emotional and social wellbeing into account.

Although chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis
  • General aches and pains from joints, muscle spasms and cramp
  • Headache caused by neck problems
  • Frozen shoulder, shoulder pain from back and neck problems
  • Elbow pain or tennis elbow from back and neck problems
  • Prevention of migraine
  • Sporting aches and pains

The title of chiropractor is protected by government legislation and to attain this level of education a chiropractor is required to have completed a 4 to 5 year Master’s degree.
